Walter J. Schmitt, Jr.

Walter J. Schmitt, Jr., 91, former Camden resident, passed away Tuesday (May 29, 2012) in Black Mountain, NC. He was born May 3, 1921, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Walter J. and Irene (Vose) Schmitt, Sr. He was a 1941 graduate of Hillsdale High School and a 1983 retiree from Dana Corporation in Hillsdale. Walter was a veteran of WWII and served with the U. S. Army in the South Pacific, including Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. He played softball for the Reading Merchants and enjoyed bowling, fishing, and playing Euchre.

On February 15, 1947, he married Virginia L. McKay and she preceded him in death in 1996. Survivors include: one daughter, Patricia (Jack) Dryer of Bostic, NC; one son, James B. Schmitt of Coldwater; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Walter J. Schmitt, III and one brother, William.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, 1:00 PM at Camden Cemetery with Pastor Don Harkey officiating. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are entrusted to the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel, Reading.
